What’s in a name?
Our kids LOVE the S.H.A.R.E. picnic! Rain or shine, they are glad to be part of this awesome event featuring food, crafts, face painting, games and dancing.
S.H.A.R.E. is an acronym for Students Helping Area Residents Effectively. The key objective of S.H.A.R.E. is to teach high school students the benefits of community service. UrbanPromise Trenton has been a S.H.A.R.E. partner since 2014. And we can attest that the name S.H.A.R.E. is entirely appropriate! S.H.A.R.E. students and parent advisors are totally committed to sharing their time, talent and treasure with enthusiasm and compassion. And our UPT kids really enjoy having fun and learning with the S.H.A.R.E. students!
Established in 1993, it was a way for students to honor Joanne Hansen, a member of the school community who became totally disabled following a stroke, the organization has since grown to include many community service activities and is comprised of high school students who reside within the boundaries of Council Rock School District. S.H.A.R.E. is not affiliated with the school district and therefore is open to any student attending a private school.
Each fall the S.H.A.R.E. team hosts a Halloween Hayride for all our kids. Boy do the kids enjoy the hayride and picking pumpkins. And there is always great food, too! S.H.A.R.E. families also collect gently used warm wear and parents are thrilled to find some great items for their kids just in case one of their children “loses their coat” (What parent has not heard this before? Where to do all those coats go, anyway?).
At Christmastime S.H.A.R.E. host a rockin’ Christmas party for kids and families. Great food, fun and games, crafts and dancing. Then Santa shows up! What’s not to love? On the sly, S.H.A.R.E. provides two gifts for every child who participates in our AfterSchool Program. It is a labor of love and it shows in the carefully wrapped packages and thoughtfully chosen gifts.
UPT loves the S.H.A.R.E. kids, but we want to especially recognize the amazing S.H.A.R.E. advisors: Aileen, Francine and Regina, who make sure all the connections connect year after year. These three leaders are joined by a host of other adults who always show up to make sure every event is perfect for our UPT kids and families.
We know the S.H.A.R.E. members are awarded community service credit (LINC Hours) for each hour they spend giving back to the community through their work with us, but we also know that their service is about more than racking up LINC hours for a college application. The teens who are part of the UPT outreach team are ready to jump in and help our students with just about any project we ask them to undertake. So what’s in a name? Everything when the whole team truly lives up to their name…S.H.A.R.E.!
Thanks, S.H.A.R.E., for another great year! We will see you in the autumn!
